Speaker guidelines

Time control

  • Is important to practice your session before doing it for the first time to know how much time will it need.
  • Consider that the attendees will have questions, don't spend all the time with your talk and give some time for the Q&A.
  • Is better to go slowly and cover less than going fast and trying to say everything. If you go fast, the attendees will miss the most part of it.

Slides style

Here is the slides template.

The rooms can be big and with lots of seats, remember that your presentation should be easily readable from the last row. Try to stand up a few meters away from your screen. If you can read it easily, the font size is correct. As a trick, try to don't put more than eight lines on each slide with a maximum of 30 characters. Use a font size of 28 or more and add a generous line spacing.

Be concise in your slides so they are easy to read and understand. Remember that the audience is listening to you and the slides are there only a means of support. Simplify as much as possible, try not to overuse use animations and add only what is really necessary. If the content is complex, divide it into sections, try to extend or shorten your session in specific topics.

Avoid the use of CAPITAL LETTERS. Capital letters are harder to read and use more space on the screen. Use bold and italic to emphasize the sentences. The use of underscores is not recommended.

The projectors are 16:9 with HDMI connection.

Two sessions format

This year we thought that could be useful to create a new session format, the Lightning talk.

There are a lot of topics that the speaker needs, at least, 45 minutes to deliver the idea correctly, but we've seen those years that there are some other topics that need less time to be delivered.

Standard (45min)

The standard talks are the typical talks. The speaker has 35-40 minutes to deliver the topic and 5-10 additional minutes to answer questions from the audience.

Lightning (15min)

Lightning talks are quicker and summarized than Standards and normally last between 3 and 7 minutes. In the conference jargon, are also known as data blitz.

Lighting has a clear objective, explain the topic in less than 10 minutes, keeping in mind that is much more important to DELIVER than the CONTENT.

Many of the famous TEDTalks are also Lightning talks.

In Drupalcamp Spain 2017, a volunteer will let you know when you have 5 minutes left.

Here you can find other tips.
